I agree with your assessment, except there have been worse Star Wars movies than this. But overall yes, too much was taken for granted as far as the back-story was concerned about the Republic and the First Order and such. To be honest, I also didn't care for any of the comedy (or the characters, for that matter.) A lot of the plot and character development was taken for granted, and the camaraderie was definitely unwarranted considering how long everyone knew each other.

It wasn't a terrible film, but it shares similar pitfalls with the new Star Trek films where they focus on spectacle over substance. The most significantly characterized character in this movie was Kylo Ren and that was a problem considering his screen time compared to the others. I wouldn't care to watch this movie again in theatres, but I'd watch it again before I watched Attack of the Clones, that's for sure.
