Not everybody is bashing everything Lucas has done to the franchise. You can obviously see the love for A New Hope and not a bad reception for Revenge of the Sith. But you can see that The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones are on the bottom of many lists. We are in agreement, then. Prior to this movie Episode I and II were at the bottom of my list as well. Still, it is my belief that people would tear this movie apart if Lucas was behind it.

The villain alone would make sure of that.

Well, I can't talk about anybody else, that's for sure. I honestly think that the quality of the movie is vastly superior to Episode I/II, and I can't see myself thinking otherwise. But I don't think it's about Lucas, since I enjoyed A New Hope and Revenge of the Sith a lot. 

About the villain, as see it as a welcome change to the Star-Wars typical villain, over-powerful and badass as hell. I think troubled, conflicted villains work better in any movie. At least I find that more engaging.
