I don't think it's as good as the OG trilogy, but it's absolutely not bad any comparing it to the prequels is an insult to coherent storytelling. Star Wars has never been good at explaining their settings, especially A New Hope. Hopefully much of that will be explained in the 8 and 9, but we don't need to know the origins of the Knights of Ren or the First Order yet.

We knew like nothing about how the empire was formed until over 10 years after the OG trilogy released. Yet the OG trilogy is as acclaimed as it is because it didn't need to explain that stuff to be great, and neither does this. Luke had very little back story in A New Hope, so let's not be hypocritical here.

I do agree that Kylo Ren is an incredibly weak villain, though. But even he isn't as bad as say, Darth Maul, who people only like because he looks cool. That being said, the are obviously building him up to develop into a better villain throughout the trilogy, so I with hold judgement for now. Still, he shouldn't have been defeated by Rey. The lightsaber choreography in this movie in general was pretty poor, but the fact that a trained swordsmen, even if injured, was even struggling against Finn or Rey is absurd and a slight on his character. The death of Solo was meant to empower him, only to be defeated by a force noob in the next scene. Not good writing at all. But not as bad as anything in the original trilogy by any stretch of the imagination.
