Whole heartedly disagree with Hero mode being overwhelming hard. It's actually significantly easier than Hypersonic League. Cause the AI isn't programmed to deal with the mechanics of the boost/shield meter. It really just takes restraint with your boost meter and a really good handling vehicle. Basically, use Rochdale or possibly Ziro and it becomes prefectly manageable for most maps.
But I could tell the challenge was going to be divisive. I really like it a lot though.
