#5 Mario Galaxy 1 It made Mario feel fresh as a daisy again, and will end up talked about as second only to Mario 64 in terms of quality of title for the time.
#4 Uncharted 2. Revolutionised how we think of cinematic games producing a story good not only for video games, but also for Movies, whilst also holding together all the key gameplay mechanics to make a great game from just a gameplay perspective.
#3 TLOU. Building from the cinematic story telling from UC2+3, Naughty Dog showed that they can produce a more mature reserved story hitting higher emotional highs than ever before, whilst also managing to add depth to the gameplay and mechanics, and then also adding environmental story telling to the mix also make this a must play.
#2 Demon's Souls. In an era of babying gamers with handholding and dumbing down of nearly ever aspect of the modern game, this was a breath of fresh air like no other. A game that chucked you into the world with seemingly very little to help you or few things explained, requiring a thoughtful look into how the game works, what effects what, how to approach an area, a brutal examination of what playstyle suits you, only to become a massively rewarding and accessible game once a bit of patience is learned and the core gameplay mechanics understood, whilst also having a fairness and depth to allow one to feel like a god at almost any level in any area once a degree of mastery is found. Coupled that with level design unrivalled this game really is a legendary game.
#1 Dark Souls. However it's not until the spiritual sequel where From Software really shines a continuous world allows From much more expansive and deep character quest lines than those found in Demon's, whilst also allowing better story telling and insight into how each area affected each other in the story, making the game feel much more cohesive, yet despite the continuous world the level design take no knocks, and if anything improves, with the winding levels becoming a revaltion when a shortcut back to where you started is found, and then another after that, and another after that. Add in the stus system an the run back to a boss room becomes even more intense due to the need to get there in a good enough state so that the fight itself is achievable, rather than just carrying 99 of all the different types of grass and being fine for any boss in the game for Demon's souls. This is a game that will be talked about until the end of time, and will be used as an example of how to produce top quality levels to any future would be game developers for forseeable future.
