That is a ridiculous claim with absolutely nothing to support it. Melee is bigger than ever before precisely because the gameplay is so different from Brawl and Smash 4. Very few top Melee players play Smash 4 even on a casual level.

Let's talk numbers. The greatest smash tournaments in terms of participants are:

1. Smash 4: EVO 2015 - 1,926 (July 2015)

2. Melee: EVO 2015 - 1,869 (July 2015)

3. Melee: Genesis 3 - 1,734+ (January 2016)

4. Melee: The Big House 5 - 1,317 (October 2015

5. Melee: Apex 2015 - 1,037 (January 2015)

6. Smash 4: Genesis 3 - 982+ (January 2016)

7. Melee: Evo 2014 - 970 (July 2014)

8. Smash 4: Apex 2015 - 837 (January 2015)

With these numbers in mind it is quite clear that Melee remains the favorite in the competitive scene. Any other claim is just wishful thinking.

No offence mate but he's right Smash 4 for many tournaments this year has had a bigger presence, these tournaments include the likes of NEC last week, Norcal Regionals, Canada Cup and even Evo which are all huge tournaments as far as competitive fighting goes. Melee is bigger then before but it's no longer the go to game and mind you this is only the first year for Smash 4 and it beat out Melee in the biggest tournament of the year Evo, that number alone actually proves his point in a way.
