Sakurai is known to be a huge Fire Emblem fan and also contributed to something to do with the Fire Emblem 25th anniversary if I remember correctly. Personal preference definately plays a role and Sakurai has the right make choices based on this. If he wants to put an extra FE character in I'm okay with that seing as he has created the game, put so much effort in it and absolutely stuffed it with content already.
But I agree with pretty much everything you said. Corrin looks cool to play and Bayonetta absolutely amazing
