Also, the sailing was basically a giant loadling screen, because the gamecube didn't have the power to make one truly connected world of that size work. So everytime you sailed from island to Island it used the ocean to load the next area.
Aonuma adressed that this made the world feel empty and unconnected, something he specifically said he wanted to rectefy in Zelda U. That makes me think he is aware of the problems many open world games suffer in regards to haveing a world that might be big, but has nothing to do in it. based on that statement, I think the Zelda U world will be only moderately big and tightly designed.
