I don't think Zelda has that much mainstream appeal left honestly, not in its current form anyway.

I don't agree, especially because Zelda U is Zelda like fans always wanted (Zelda with huge beautiful true open world) and like Nintendo already said it will be ultimate "Zelda expariance". 

How big is the Zelda fanbase though, these days? Series sales have been in decline since Twilight Princess.

And Nintendo saying its the "ultimate Zelda" means nothing, it's just PR.
