Europe isn't as sentimental towards the Nintendo brand, meaning that Nintendo consoles sell on merit alone. Their success is mostly dependant on how marketable their system and software is. Whereas in America their sales benefit from nolstagia and adults who are fond of Nintendo in general and are happy to have a secondary console where they only buy 1/3 games per year.
The reverse of this applies to the Playstation brand and is visible in the Vita's performance.
