Its because americans appreciate the art style and game style more than europeans do.
Even more than the Japanese do.

These cute bright colored mascot characters just resonate better with americans, than anywhere else in the world.
(when I think america, I think neon lights, disney themeparks, gigantic movie industy, everything frantic & colourfull, and a very simple form of humor).

(nintendo has alot of that in it, because its aimed at kids).

 

also history, sega was big in europe.. back when nintendo was hitting majorly everywhere else.

Then after that it was playstation. So nintendo never really had as much time to shine in the spotlight back in its glory days to build brand in the eu.
