Partially that is historical. Nintendo themself hit the european market very late and with 'kids toys'. So they never where that big over here.
When the home consoles arrived classic home computers still where big and PC was growing.
The Genesis/Mega Drive was bigger over here than the SNES. The N64 was pretty weak over here. Only handhelds were where Nintendo was the big player in Europe. And with the decline in handhelds even that will be history soon.
Sony managed to appeal to the teen and adult gamers and at the same time had enough family games on PS1 and PS2, at least with third parties.
