I'll concur with what rolltide101 said. Most fighting game players use the D-pad over the analog stick, because it's easier to do most inputs faster. To give you an idea of how few people use the analog stick, here's a tweet from Markman who works at Madcatz, responding to a question from a person asking why they even bothered to include the aalog stick on their new controller.
"Believe or not, some fighting game players use the analog stick."
Some do, but the general preference is the d-pad for traditional fighting games. The analog stick on a controller is not to be confused by the digital stick though that's found in arcades or on fight sticks. It functions a bit differently, and since you use your wrist instead of your thumb, many prefer this over a d-pad even.

I always thought d-pad were unpopular in fighting games. My bad.
I'm aware arcade sticks are different tho. Was it because of the online then ? I remember more core fighting games players on 360. (edit : in the west obviously)
