As you mentioned earlier, Aonuma has been spread out pretty thin this generation so that might be a pretty reasonable explanation. Plus, you also mentioned XCX being similar since it was announced in 2013 and it kept getting updates but hell these didn't really start until late last year/early this year. There was a long period for silence regarding that title and for SMT x FE (now #FE) as well. The only way I can explain this is that Nintendo had some internal goings-on this generation that caused stuff to be put on the back burner while somethings got straightened out.
But hey I'm just happy that this isn't a Last Guardian situation all over again.

That's not exactly correct.

For Xenoblade X:

Jan 2013 direct -trailer announcement

E3 2013 - trailer

E3 2014 - trailer

E3 2014 - treehouse gamplay

Nov 2014 direct - trailer

2015 constant updates

In the case of Zelda Wii U:

E3 2014 - teaser trailer

TGA 2014 - off screen footage of an empty world

Nov 2015 direct - 13 seconds unworthy footage

While we got at least 4 trailers and gameplay for X a year before its release, for Zelda we got 2 teasers and off screen footage.

Looking back you are right about XCX being at E3 2014, I could have sworn it was absent but I guess Splatoon and other things covered it up. Looking back on it now my thought is that the game is proving to be a pretty huge endeavor and that they announced it too early... And I doubt Nintendo would beat around the bush with the game (Zelda games aren't really that risky and sell a good amount). I guess we will have to be patient and wait Pavo.
