Fallout 4 is not a mainline game by the way, because Fallout 1 was made by Interplay and Fallout 4 was made by Bethesda.  Makes perfect sense.  Sucker Punch is making the inFamous games.  They aren't making Sly.  

Sly Thieves in Time was originally advertised as Sly 4. 

You said it, it was called Sly Cooper 4. There is definitely a reason why they changed the name.
If they wanted it to be called Sly Cooper 4, they would have called it Sly Cooper 4 or Sly Cooper 4: Thieves in TIme and not only Sly Cooper: Thieves in TIme.

It's a sequel to Sly 3, it's a mainline game, part of the main franchise. Wether you call it "Sly 4" or "The mainline Sly Cooper that is a sequel to Sly 3 but isn't Sly 4" is kinda irrelevant beyond that.

 

But I got the feeling you were saying it isn't mainline? Or just that it isn't Sly 4, as in, it's name isn't Sly 4.
