I havent seen the movie but had heard of it. I seems like a nice story and it's probably a good film.
But as far as the actual animation goes I'm not that impressed. Sure it looks beautiful and is very very competently done, but from what I can tell from the trailer it doesn't really exploit the strenghs of animation as a medium imo. (Maybe there are scenes that do, and they just aren't shown in the trailer, though).
Imo the beauty of animation is that you can show things that you can't in real life. And while hyper realstic/idealized backrounds like these are very impressive, I also find them a tiny bit boring. I feel like the strengths of animation are much better utilized in films like ghiblis princess kaguya or madhouses Redline. The fluitidy of the animation, the stylization and the deformations all come toghether to carry the general mood of the film in those cases and serve to emphazise what the characters are going through.
If you're going to do realism with prettier colors you might as well shoot a life action film and do some heavy after effects work, imo.
Ghibli has also done fairly realistic backrounds in the past, but I'm that much more impressed because those were hand drawn with fucking poster colors.
Also, this last one is a pet peeve of mine, but I feel like the use of cgi and computer colored backrounds is really noticable in this trailer, to the point it's a little distracting to me.
As for my favourite Anime movies they're probably Spirited Away, Nausicaä, Howls Moving Castle, Grave of the Fireflies/Totoro (Because my little heart can't stand watching GotF on it's own) and Paprica. I have a pile of movies I need to watch though, Tokio Godfathers is at the top right now.
