Yeah the sense of wonder that new games on new hardware produced, definitely is and was a big factor in achieving success. The DS and Wii managed to replicate that sense of wonder through using the touchscreen and motion controls as their draw cards rather than graphical bling.
That sense of wonder the Wii U never really had. No graphical bling and no new way to play, the second screen gaming never really caught the imagination of consumers or developers
