For having played the game through 140 stars I would say that it's more of a port with added bonus than a remake. There are no new levels only mini-levels each containing 2 stars and an unlockable character. The 15 stars added to the regular levels are lazy (collect 5 silver stars or step on the switch). I think it's a good port but that's definitely not a remake.
