I disagree, I think a presentation with Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and 2D Mario would be well-received - not by all of course, but by a big segment of the Nintendo fanbase. Sure, NSMBU didn't generate much hype - but that's because it looked basically the same as any other NSMB game. Tropical Freeze meanwhile looked exactly like DKC Returns.

And also, your last statement doesn't take into account the differing expectations of the two events. The fact that it's even possible to say that last week's Direct was better than E3 shows the magnitude of the E3 failure. E3 is traditionally the biggest event by a long, long way for Nintendo reveals, in a typical year.

Strange that "it looks the same" didn't apply to Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Of course there were different expectations for the two events, mainly because Smeags didn't play make-believe this time around. Ignoring that, Nintendo Directs had spaced out reveals over the course of the full year long before this year's E3, so the importance of E3 isn't anywhere close to as big as it used to be a few years ago.

Oh my word, you really are going to push this! Did you consider that "it looks the same" didn't apply to Galaxy 2 because it was a direct sequel to one of the best games of all time? NSMBU meanwhile was the fourth New Super Mario Bros. - and that was a series that never had as much love as Galaxy to begin with. By the way, I remember from the Galaxy 2 E3 that there was plenty of hype also surrounding New Super Mario Bros. Wii, announced at the same time.
