This was due entirely to [Xbox One and PlayStation 4] generation sales, which rose by 12 percent to offset the 66 percent decrease in hardware sales for last generation consoles.”

So if last years October NPD is

PS4: 297k
XBO: 168k

12%

= 520.8k

and XBO is 304k so PS4 is 216.8k?

because if you increase October 2014 PS4 numbers buy 12% it beats XBO.

What I bolded in your post: this gen's numbers, not just PS4 and XB1. This gen = PS4, XB1, Wii U, Vita and 3DS. Those are all current generation consoles.

Well then is PS4 down or flat? because if it's 2.5% or more up it beats the leaked XBO numbers.

This is the math you have to do as far as I understand: (PS4+XB1+Wii U+Vita+3DS sales in October 2014)*1.12= current gen HW sales in October 2015. Unfortunately that's impossible due to the lack of Vita numbers from October 2014, but (PS4+XB1+Wii U+3DS)*1.12=753.76k. XB1 is ~304k, so PS4+Wii U+3DS=449.76k. With Vita you might add another ~10k, so lets just round it out nice and smooth at 460k total for the PS4, Wii U, 3DS and Vita combined.

Again, this is how it works as far as I understand.
