I'd say that Yellow/Crystal/Emerald are different then the other 2 versions. Yellow made you start off with Pikachu, and made you keep it out at all times, which was totally different. Crystal added the Battle Tower (I think) which has been a mainstay since, as well as the Suicune storyline. Emerald is essentially the same, the only thing was that both Teams were enemies (I don't see that as big a difference).
So I would say no to Yellow/Crystal and a maybe to Emerald.
