I am a 2D Mario fan. 2D Mario , OLD sprite based 2D Mario, is far superior to any other Mario that has come out, even though there are GREAT 3D Mario games.
However, I prefer Galaxy to 3D World. Neither of them is the 3D Mario type of game that I have dreamed of ever since Mario 64 came out, which would be an epic, sprawling 3D represenation of the Mushroom Kingdom/World, basically a 3D SMB3, visiting all those lands, plus maybe Dinosaur Island, maybe even Subcon as a neat hidden "Special World". You have to use pipes to get around, the world is big enough. Doesn't even have to be "open world", could just be levels, but HUGE levels that you can really run around and explore in. All I know, is that I've always wanted, even as a kid playing SMB3 when it was new, to be able to feel like I'm really running around the kind of elaborate, crazy Mushroom Kingdom lands that SMB3 shows us, and we have YET to ever truly get that. People praise Mario 64, but while it was great, all it was was jumping into small levels inside magic paintings. That's ALL we've ever gotten, is small 3D levels. No actual Mushroom Kingdom, no huge levels.
But when it comes to 3D Mario, I prefer Galaxy 1 over 3D World. 3D World is a great game, and a "real 3D Mario" (whatever that means). I especially liked the Mario 2 aspects, like an emphasis on throwing stuff and those 4 playable characters. I just wish they had taken it further, and had MORE enemies from SMB2 (like, the all of em, including the bosses), and surprised everyone by having Wart be in the game. THAT would have been something. Wart deserves a comeback. For real. But in general, I prefer most things about Mario Galaxy. I don't prefer the gravity/planetoid stuff, but it WAS neat for it's time. And the graphic look is much better to me, more organic looking, as opposed to 3D World where the characters look like plastic toys.
I did not, personally, however, like Mario Galaxy 2 much at all. It basically reminded me of Lost Levels, which isn't a good thing. It was an unnecissary cash-in Sequel, Yoshi was somewhat a pointless inclusion when he didn't even totally work right. And after playing the remade Mario 64 level in those graphics, all it did was make me wish they had just make a Wii remake of Super Mario 64 in it's entirety instead. That would have been a much better game. But Galaxy was a good stand-alone title, and never needed a direct sequel. And it annoys the hell out of me, that so many gamers clamor for or even outright EXPECT a "Galaxy 3". We do NOT need more "Mario in Space".
I don't know that I'll ever get my dream 3D Mario concept, though I really wish Nintendo would just go that route finally. But I would at least like to see them take a fresh direction that is NOT just another 64, or Sunshine (bleh), or Galaxy.
