You know your son better than I do, but I'd say get Splatoon. Even if he doesn't get on with the online side of things, the bright colours, the look of the Inklings, the single player mode and all the customisable costumes will be fun for him to play with. But it sounds like he is able to handle the idea of competitive play online from what you're saying about MK8. It's difficult to predict how they're going to react sometimes!
Minecraft sounds ideal from what you say, but I would hold off on Smash Brothers, though. Not just because it's a Pegi 12 anyway, (I waited until my kids were 10) but because there's more likelihood of him raging, especially on the 1 on 1, and the game's suspension system for breaking the rules online might cause difficulties, too.
