It's actually quite simple.
1) The gaming media is corrupt as hell and was engaged in all kinds of improprieties (see deepfreeze.it). This was unravelled following on from accusations that some chick had been sleeping around the help her game get exposure.
2) Loads of assholes online sent her death threats and all of that crap you tend to find online when you piss the wrong people off.
3) The gaming media, confronted with a lot of people demanding explanations for the corruption, completely doubled down, refused to address any of it and deliberately equated everyone who was upset about it along with the people sending death threats to this girl. They then went to the mainstream media and spread the idea that that's what gamergate was mostly about in order to shut it down.
4) Everyone involved has remained angry ever since.
