Well, when we compare it to Halo 3, the best like for like entry in the series, the Halo franchise is definitely in decline. Halo 3 launched the last week of the month, like Halo 5. Both were the first main entry in the franchise for their gen. Both launched on a small user base, the XBO actually beating the 360 by 2M+ in the same time frame. Yet, Halo 5 did 3.3M just in the US, according to NPD. If these numbers are right, I doubt Halo 5 even did 3M WW. Probably closer to 2.5M.

It's definitely not a failure, but it just continues to illustrate how the XBO isn't doing any favors for Xbox franchises.

I don't think it means the series has declined. If halo 5 did 2-5-3 million worldwide with digital and halo 3 did whatever it did(3.5 million?). That's not that big of a difference and considering halo 3 probably had a marketing budget 3-5 times the size of 5's it's not bad at all.

May want to reread my post.  Halo 3 did 3.3M in the US alone, which means it was most likely close to 4M WW (VGC has it estimated at 3.8M), without digital.  If these numbers are right, then Halo 5 probably did ~2.5M WW, with digital.  That is a definite decline.  Hopefully, MS doesn't do to Halo what they did to Forza, and make it a yearly series.  Halo Wars one year, main entry the next.  Cause if they do, it'll decline even more.

The enxt halo game should release during 2018. I wouldnt worry much about that that.
