At E3 Miyamoto said that online multiplayer wasn't the priority, but would be considered if the development team felt it would work. Perhaps the delay has given them time to include online multiplayer. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some kind of local multiplayer involving one player on the gamepad against/with players using wiimotes or pro controllers. As for Miyamoto being against online multiplayer, he was producer for Luigi's Mansion 2, which featured online multiplayer.
