If your graphics card is having issues going back and forth between monitors and resolutions it could be time to google the name of it and best driver for multi monitor displays, could be a simple task of going with a slightly older driver. Alternatively upgrade your OS HDD to an SSD and if you run into issues after changing display output just restart the PC after you change screen you're using, from an SSD a reboot takes about 15-20 secs and it'll iron out and display issues from the other output. Hopefully anyways.

It's windows 7. When I switch inputs on my amp, windows 7 thinks it needs to switch back to the monitor, which is not connected.  Windows 7 then resizes the desktop to 640x480 (or something stupid low, safe mode res). When I switch back to the pc it restores the resolution and output, yet all windows are bunched in the top left corner. Some games don't survive this forced resolution change.
I'll upgrade to win 10 some day, that will probably fix it. Until then, save game first before switching.

If you're confident with changing the registry you could give a look at the answer found in

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/windows-7-movesresizes-windows-on-monitor-power/1653aafb-848b-464a-8c69-1a68fbd106aa?auth=1

It envolves changing what windows jumps to as the "go to" resolution inside the registry so if you set that to the default which you want to use all the time it might prevent it from changing when you switch the audio output on the amp you use (I'm guessing you use hdmi audio to the amp?) it could be worth a look.

!!!! Keep in mind that changes to the registry happen live, ie as soon as you input the change it will take effect and wont have a "are ya sure this is the resolution you want" type of pop-up message, so either make a backup of the registry before going into it and changing stuff or alternatively, don't go into it and change stuff if you're not confident.

Hope you get something outta the link tho!

(if that doesn't solve it and you want more IT support can always gimme a pm, tis what I do for a living)
