I'm the friend!

Yeah, tomatoes are essential for pizza! I mean, without them it's just cheese on toast ya know...

Tomatoes where brought back to europe from america (I believe).

The pizza is much much older than os knowing of tomatos.

Back then the romans made pizza's without tomato sauce, they used a paste made out of olives instead.

You can make good pizza without tomatoes, but.... yeah I still think of the "classic" pizza as needing tomatos.

That says the romans only had a precursor to pizza and that 'The innovation that led to flat bread pizza was the use of tomato as a topping' so... tomatoes FTW!

Its a wiki page though (not often 100% correct)... and Im pretty sure most italians would claim the pizza is older than them haveing tomatoes.

My dad is a foodie? foody? and he always says the orignal pizza was made with olive paste.

The romans wrote everything down, there are records of how to make a pizza, from waaaay back then.

Basically it would come down to fighting over weather or not its "right" to still call it a pizza if it doesnt have tomatoes on it.

But yeah it was basically made the exact same way, eaten the same way,... the main differnce would be the no tomatoes part.
