Wut? "Finally" races decently? I didn't follow the Moto GP for years (maybe even 10 years, I don't know), but before a lot of his competitors even rode a bike in competition, that guy was winning races and was the world champion so easily it wasn't even interesting to watch...

Valentino Rossi is one of the greatest bikers of the last 10-15 years. You can hate him and he can be a jerk or even a tax evader, it doesn't erase that. He won his praises.

EDIT: In 2001, world champion (500 cc), with 11 wins out of 16 races. "Finally" races decently....

I was talking about the last 5 or so years when he didn't win any GP but was praised even more than he used to when he won. If you look back in those years he didn't win almost anything... you can't really understand how much hyped people get about him in his country of origin but imho he didn't deserved what he got in the last years...

Guys like Pirlo or even Giggs in football didn't win everything each year, but were always praised because they are/were modern legends in their sport. Federer in tennis also had a few rough years, and was always praised. You can find others in a lot of sports. A great champion or a legend will be one forever, rough times or not, and (at least some) people will always praise him/her for it.
