Launching a home console is a huge investment of resources for any of them. Also if you include the simultaneous development of multiple launch titles and the marketing alone, the costs make it a big gamble. I'm sure that nintendo doesn't want a repeat of the wii u with the NX. Choosing a good launch period is essential to that and it would be wise to not rush. Nintendo certainly can wait til 2017, though. It can make plenty of money off of the wii u software til then. It should release zelda U before then and do a port for the NX later. There's no reason to launch NX in a highly competitive 2016 versus launching it later on. It wouldn't hurt for nintendo to put some real effort to cultivate it's relationships with third parties for NX. |
Regardless, point is that Xbox had life of 4 years, same like probably Wii U will have, nothing change if its beginning or late in generation.
I agree, launch it's very expensive, but almost every console has good launch, even Wii U with all mistake that Nintendo made (terrible name, bad and confusing marketing, week launch tiles, high price...) had pretty good launch, but problems for Wii U started after holiday season in January. I am also sure that Nintendo doesn't want to repeat those mistakes and they will prepare good launch, but point is that they can prepare launch for Q4 2016.
I dont see what exactly will be different in 2017. in comparison with 2016!? In 2017. there will also be strong competitive but probably with lower prices of PS4/X1 than in 2016. Only difference is that Nintendo will lose whole year with bad sales with WiiU/3DS, the sooner they release new hardware better, off course if they can prepare launch on time, but all indicates they can and that we will have new Nintendo hardware next year. Nintendo now having much better relationship and approach in comparison with Wii U launch, just look how great they treating Indies.
