Shit internet and unreliable PSN/Xbox live networks are the weakest reasons why it should never happen to be honest. Here's the real reasons why online only consoles should never happen. The only reason for a console to be "online only" would be because of more restrictive DRM and game streaming. Well, alot would change with that in mind. I wouldn't be able to buy or trade used games nor I would be able to collect any games to play later. What happens when the console is no longer supported by servers? Can't play games. What happens if you're banned from your account? Can't play games or use your console. Would you lose access to all your games? Yep. Isn't that the opposite of any sort of progression of video game consoles? Damn skimpy and that's why it's not the future. I'll tell ya what online only consoles truly are. They are a shit sandwich but some try to convince others it's really angus beef instead. I'm sure that MS, Sony and Nintendo understand how gamers would respond to it, perfectly. MS got a taste of it already. Going from being able to play used or new physical games or digital games whenever you please, online or offline to digital only, always online, games stored on a cloud consoles would be a slap to the face with nothing positive to come from it. |
I didn't want to talk about reasons but saying the consoles are just worth a lot less without internet and most people have them always connected anyways. Of course there are also implications by doing it but that doesn't change the fact that many wouldn't even notice it.
And what is a PS4 worth in 20 years? When you buy it used with games like DC or TW3 and the online servers are gone, season passes have no value anymore and patches can't be applied?
Consoles already changed a lot and already games rely on it, almost too much, in my opinion. But that is just the way it is and the way it will go further, with one convergating point being ps now.
