There's a bit of a stretch between a sizable day 1 update and consoles being online only. 

Of course this is exaggerating but what would change if the consoles would be online only, seriously? Sure, there are cases when internet doesn't work or game services are offline but in general? Most people probably configure the network settings once and never take their consoles offline intentionally when not moving or something like that.
