Why is censorship still a thing..? Especially in US?

Well, cultural differences is a thing. Different countries have different views on what's acceptable and what's not.
Just look at poor Germany, everything gets censored there :c

My opinion is, don't censor, simply label accordingly and be open with the "dangerous" stuff.
