Oh please, don't try this revisionist history crap with me bud. Everybody everywhere was praising this game in every single way, ESPECIALLY plot, for months after it came out. Don't go and claim that it's simple now when that was the strong point of the game a year ago.
I'd change a lot, if we're going to get into that. A shitty story performed well by the leads is still shitty. I will keep it spoiler free because, again , mobile and I don't trust myself with handmade spoiler tags for fear they don't work. So I wouldn't introduce flat characters just to be killed off to make me try and feel an emotion. I wouldn't start summer off with some BS discussion between Joel and Tess about smuggling to make me feel connected to them, I'd show the smuggling first. Playing minimalist there just feels lazy. I wouldn't have the end of Fall happen as it does because that's 100% unrealistic. It makes for good development but there are ways to do that WITHOUT going that over the top and making me literally, out loud, say "come on, really?" I'd fix the upside down segment because we don't need that sort of setpiece where they have to give you unlimited ammo in a game marketed heavily on the point of survival. That comes off as lazy and they did that sort of setpiece better with the truck. It just felt like they wanted to match up to Uncharted there. I'd make maybe four more enemy types for Cordiceps because i feel it gets a bit dull after 10 hours. I'd make it so that EVERY human isn't automatically evil. We were led to believe that you'd feel bad for killing humans because they're just trying to survive but then every human you fight is unquestionably an asshole and I never once felt remorse. I'd add more than ONE animation for stealth takedowns as Joel because, y'know, that's obvious. Swear to god I never got anything but the one. I wouldn't make Joel, a smuggler who has shot guns for at least a decade, have such garbage aiming that you have to pay to upgrade. Don't make a mechanic intentionally shit just to level it up, that's bad design. I also dislike the ending; I have more but I'm in a time crunch, forgive me. |
If you don't read and comprehend what i am saying then there is no reason to continue this discussion. And there is no need to get upset either.
I argued that the story is straight forward and does not change it's premise, but it is still excellent and well written, there is no contradiction in that.
And under all this subjective cherry picking and jumbling gameplay with plot points you do after that, if you belive they didn't meet any people in this game that are not evil, then you must have played a different game, or you have a serious case of selective denial.
“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
