They tried to create a overarching timeline for the Zelda games and they got the mess with the multiple timelines existing that makes even the DC post-Crisis/pre New 52 timeline look reasonable. Having a series with character development or a overarching plot would either have Nintendo be forced to adopt it for future games or ignore it and risk alienating any new audience they might have gotten which would be the whole point outside of money for having a series in the first place.


I don't think they'd alienate anyone. Hyrule Warriors isn't canon. A Zelda show doesn't need to be either. Also, the timeline is a fucking mess. If they wanted it to be canon, they could put it just about anywhere, and it wouldn't mess anything up. Same for Mario. The Mario show/movie could be its own thing too.
