Actually I have noticed that when I get disconnected it will sometimes just assume I was first in the race (so it actually gives me points unless it was etween races)
However a couple of times I have lost points but those times I suspect it was my router that caused the disconnection, so if it is Nintendo's servers fault it will not punish you, but if it is your connction it will.
Of course if you went exactly back to the points you had before then maybe that was a different error?
