It is a masterpiece-level game that is still holds exceptional game values and designs far better than many AAA class games released in this day and age. Since a virtual console release is unlikely (due to legal issues), I would say that the best way to experience the game is with the original cartridge (although as it is said you will have to replace the battery for sure).

Although emulators work well, they still lack the full punch that was replicated on the original systems. Sorry to say, but I am VERY picky about such things. ;)
