Thats because a WiiU game can do all so much with its terrible userbase. Looking at it only for the WiiU games, its outpacing MK8, Outsold SSB, and is closing the gaps with Wii Sports U/NSMBU which were heavily bundled.

If Splatoon were on 3DS, It would of easily surpassed 2mil by now. Hell being on the Vita i think 2mil+ would be possible xD

in the context of the wii u, sure  it can be in the top 5. But when you talk about hypothetical "if it was on," then I have to disagree. If minecraft was on Nintendo consoles, especially 3ds, sales would explode in japan, if yokai watch, MH, pokemon, and mario kart were on the vita, then they would steadily outpace splatoon.

like I said, there are just too much franchises that already have a footing in Japan for splatoon to be in the top 5
