Im wonderign when nintendow ill announce a direct.

Hopefully soon, but I have doubts that the mobile game will be part of that.

DeNA has just announced minutes ago that the first mobile game will be announced soon, which means the membership too. It'll be any day now. Looking at their comments again though, I'm 100% sure now that on mobile, the membership will literally be a Mobage like platform. They mention numerous times how having a back end platform like Mobage is integral to making their mobile games long term successes. I don't know how they plan to do that on iOS, but they are definitely doing that.

“Our approach was more about looking at their strengths, and then looking at our strengths, and when we get together we can do something bigger. Our initial discussions were around memberships and backend systems. Through this discussion we said that if we build this backend, we should obviously work on a game. And if we’re making a game, we should use Nintendo IPs.”

And especially this:

“Looking at successful players like King or Supercell, they have a massive user base, and they’re very successful at creating content. But they haven’t really built a backend system in the way we have done, and I think that’s the key part. When you look at successful players in the mobile gaming space today, not many of them have created backend platform systems.”

“Not many people talk about this but DeNA created the platform called Mobage. Also, we started our business in VC business — that was basically a platform. DeNA has been focused on mobile platform business, with one of them happened to be games.

“Backend is not something people see every day. We’re willing to help them build that really sophisticated backend structure. It is not a sexy part. But we’re willing to do it.”

I just wanted to say that here now so that when it comes true in a few day's, I don't have to look for that thread I made months ago saying the same exact thing. Nintendo going mobile make so much more with this in mind. A big thing for Nintendo going is the loss of a controlled ecosystem. The membership fixes that. If you look at how mobage works, it's basically Steam on mobile. And DeNA is building that. That's why Nintendo chose DeNA. That's why they invested so much money in them. They are basically making an eshop on Android and, maybe to a lesser extent, on iOS.

The idea of an independant mobile platform is pretty interesting, but as DeNA said, it really needs powerful IP to work in the west. Nintendo gives them that.

Very interesting stuff, I've not read any of that before. Thanks for the post.
