Columbus did have a profound impact on history. He tied Europe and Africa to the Americas and began a massive exchange that forever altered all three continents.  I just see no reason to celebrate him because he was an awful man that tortured and murdered people for sport.

There is an issue of style though, Columbus Day sounds cool, and is easy to say. Indigenous Peoples Day is a mouthful. Can they name it Indies Day? :p
