Both are not trying to do that.  I suspect Sony could rid MS of the console space rather easily; It's not in their best interest to do so though because they benefit from the competition. MS conversely created Xbox to stop Playstations growth as a brand in what they percieved as a threat to the PC space.  Additionally the means to which each company are willing to go through for success is not parallel to each other.  We have little to few examples of Sony buying their success as opposed to generating it, or devaluing their brand to maintain marketshare.  On a moral level, I find it much easier to justify the purchase of a PS4 over an X1.

@ the bold - This is not a matter of your opinion on the fun factor of first party titles.  This is a matter of your opinion on 1st party IP creation.

And just to iterate -

Halo - Bought from an independent company.

Gears of War - Bought from an independent company.

Minecraft - Bought from an independent company.

Fable - Bought from an independent company.

What major IPs are left afterward that they had a hand in creating?

Forza; There's more, I know there's more so I'm sure you'll be able to list them off.

No... I'm sorry but no. I disagree. Buying first party or creating the studios for them or even off-loading the dev. to a third party studio does not make it less appealing. It is basically a different strategy for the same exact result. The majority of what you are saying in tainted and I can see that you favor the Playstation/Sony side by far (which is okay and not a critic). You are acting like buying a good game is not as good as making it by themselves, it does not makes any sense. A good game is a good game lol no matter how you got it on your platform.

You have to realize that games from Sony Studios (first parties) are not as exciting as you may think for a majority of Xbox owners too. And the funny part is that it is due to loyalism I guess because games coming from both side are good at the end and they are both selling as much...

And finally. Sony could not get rid of Microsoft as easily as you think. Not at all actually. The only way would be for Microsoft to be willing to abandon the market which will not happen. (other than in dreams of all the haters out there that are hoping that generation after generation of console).

I cannot believe people still believe Sony is a nice little company passionate about gaming and gamer's happyness instead of making a huge load of money on their back using any strategy they can or money they have like any other businesses out there :)
