Those are the advantages which obviously out-weighed the cons at the time of design. (Bandwidth, capacity.)
Still think the USB ports should have been USB 3.0 though for super fast external storage.

The 5-7 thousand times a second thing looked kinda crazy to me too and I was curious if that was accurate. 300,000 rpm is nothing to sneeze at, although my only experience with those numbers is using research centrifuges.
