Playing a game on a tiny little screen on a bus, in the break room or at lunch is such a drastic drop in immersion that I really don't know how anyone does it. Different strokes I suppose. So for me, it's console... and console only. If I want to play handheld games, I'll use ios and download free little time wasters which DON'T require me to be fully immersed in some engrossing plot/story line. |
While I respect your choice, it's arguably more immersive playing on a handheld. It's definitely a more intimate experience. Your face is a few inches away from the screen with headphones and you're literally inside the game. Especially one something like the 3DS where your playing with 3D. With consoles, you're usually several feet away from the screen, and it's much more work zoning the outside world out. Even on my Wii U, I often times play on the gamepad with headphones because it's more immersive and personal.
EDIT: I also never understood the "tiny screen" agrument. A 5inch screen a foot or two away from your face takes up the same, if not more, real estate as a 32-60 inch screen that's like 6-10 feet away. The percieved size of the screens are nearly identical.
I love consoles, but it's definitely not because they're more immersive. It's because they're more comfortable and more powerful. I would absolutely never compare handheld gaming to mobile games. That's never been what handheld gaming was about. They've never been, on the whole, about "wasting time."
