You still have to consider what's available at the time of release. There wasn't much on eshop worth buying besides maybe Trine 2 if you didn't already have that and Nintendo gave eshop credit ($10) so it wasn't to much of a surprise to see decent sales.

And it really doesn't matter what platform you pick, indie games have an extremely high failure rate (mostly because the market is so damn bloated).

Gunman Clive 1/2 is basically in the same boat. First game sold decent on Nintendo platforms so the developer makes the 2nd game exclusive and the sales bomb. Can't count on the indie market IMO--to damn fickle.
