The series began as a trilogy and he seemed to have a good idea back then. When it expanded to 5 books the gaps and delays started trying to figure out how to work everything. He rewrote book 5 from scratch. Originally there was going to be a time jump with all the younger characters becoming adults (in the books the characters are several years younger than the show). This was scrapped and he had to rework a lot of points for book 5 and seems like book 6 and 7 will take as long if not longer.
It does stink for us fans who waited so long, but I am fine with it if the 6th and 7th books are well done. Will know the "true" ending likely in 2025.
