If you look at the context of the quote, it's clear that "that number" must refer to 82m and must have been mentioned by Layden. Otherwise the context and argument of Layden that the PSV isn't necessarily in trouble falls apart.

Given that Sony have been constantly quiet about Vita numbers, to the extent that they've muddied in PSP numbers with Vita's since it started doing poorly just to obscure what's going on, I don't see why he'd be so coy about PSP numbers in an interview with a site like IGN.

I mean, they announced PSP's would stop being shipped last year, yet never gave any final shipment numbers.  The only source we have is obscured in this IGN article which hasn't been sourced again by any other major gaming sites.

Hardly seems reliable for me.

I get where you're coming from, but there seems to be a lot of writer-contribution to this paragraph which is being cited as gospel.

Either way, I can see Vita being overtracked, but I don't think something like this should be the basis for analysis on how much it's overtracked.

It's not problematic to determine when the combined shipments are no longer combined. To this point, shipments are still combined.

The only way Vita tracks the way it does is if we assume nearly zero PSP shipped in the last year or two. Consider the extremely suspect recent VGC Europe and other regions Vita numbers, it's looking more and more likely the Vita is overtracked.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
