It's all about context though. The original DS was also a big disappointment compared to the GBA during its first year and a half on the market, then it caught fire when the "Lite" version was released alongside NSMB in the first half of 2006.

The DS was also half the price that the 3DS originally launched at, which severely hampered the 3DS's sales early on, along with the fact that the 3DS didn't really have any compelling games early in its life aside from 3D ports of N64 games like Starfox 64 and Ocarina.
