Well, that might occur to the onlooker who knew shit will go down even before he saw the movie. However, maybe he was aware that the creature could be dangerous, but undererstimated the potential, since he was wearing a supposedly protective suit.

And there was no indication that the "enormous creatures" were killed by those slimy worms.

They were an exploration crew , their suits weren't made for combact and of course they weren't trained for it. Honestly if I see that something enormous was killed I don't care if it happened like 20k years ago, I'm scared of whatever form of life I can't recognise in the vicinity
