| bobacob said: Can someone explain to me what attach rate for consoles actually means from a developer point of view? Quite alot on the internet nowadays you tend to hear people throwing the attach rate phrase around like wildfire. Surely a developer would take sales over attach rate anyday of the week?? So what is the point in talking about the attach rate? |
Single units software:
Console A has an install base of 10,000,000 and software title A sells 1,000,000 units. The attach rate is 10%.
Hardware to software ratio:
Console A has an install base of 10,000,000 and total software sales of 50,000,000 units. The attach rate is 5:1 (or 5 to 1 or just plain 5).
While it's a fun mechanic to toy with, it's not really useful for publishers who focus more on the actual sales volume itself. For instance: Console B has an install base of 1,0000,000 and software title A, from above, sells 500,000 units. The attach ratewould be 50%. That's greater than Console A's 10% but Console A still sold twice as many units (1 million vs 500k) which means twice as much revenue.
