I completely forgot about HD DVD.  Microsoft brought it out as the competitor to Bluray.  Bluray easily won because it was announced along with the PS3 and PS3 using Bluray technology meant you were buying a console and a Bluray player.

Like DVD with the PS2 before that. Remember when the ps2 was a "cheap" dvd player and you could get it with a "tv like" remote control ?

DVD was successful before the PS2 though.  VHS was still a thing at the time, but DVD was already a success.  If anything, that helped PS2 sales. 

I remember I made a real marketing campaign to my mom to get us a ps2 because she already wanted to buy a DVD player, and the cheapest at the time here in Brazil was like 600 BRL, with 400 BRL more she would already get us a ps2. It worked, at least in my home it reallu helped.
